You may be asking: "How did the Grand Ole Opry get its name?"
Before going on the air in December 1927, the "Music Appreciation Hour," a program of classical music with selections of Grand Opera had played. When the announcer for the "Barn Dance" came on he told listeners, "For the past hour, we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on we will present the 'Grand Ole Opry.'" The name stuck.
This is Riders in the Sky on stage.
When Nashville was flooded the Grand Ole Opry was flooded. In fact the first floor was 4 feet underwater!
Historic 1,000 year flood took place in Nashville and Middle Tennessee on the first two days in May of 2010. Over 14 inches of rain was recorded over a two day period, doubling the previous record. 14 to 15 inches of rain fall is equivalent to 420 billion gallons of water .
The Cumberland River, which is very near the Grand Ole Opry, reached nearly 12 feet above flood stage and it topped out just under 52 feet before the waters began to finally recede
What is a 100 year flood? A 100 year flood is an event that statistically has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. A 500 year flood has a .2% chance of occurring and a 1000 year flood has a .1% chance of occurring.
More pix, but it is late and I will fill you in tomorrow.
